Near enough is good enough

In case anyone in the world missed it, the Olympics are here. The bonus for me is the middle of the night viewing coincides with my middle of the night feeding.

One of my favourite sports to watch has always been swimming, and I won't lie, when I saw our girls relay win our first gold medal there were tears.

Now we Aussies are pretty good swimmers as a general rule, but this Olympics we have not been as successful as we have in the past. And you know, that's ok, we are winning medals. But what astounds me is the attitude that silver is not good enough. Um hello? It's the Olympics you got a medal, be proud, smile a little. It doesn't help that our reporters start with the question "what went wrong?" how about nothing? How about winning a silver medal is a wonderful achievement.

It bothers me that we are sending a message to our kids that doing your best is only good enough if you win. What kind of message is that? What ever happened to just plain do your best?

I'm looking forward to track and field where we will be back to excitement for any medal, regardless of the metal.

Aussie Aussie Aussie, oi oi oi

Seems like this is bothering a lot of people. Check out this link to one of my fave bloggers and what she had to say:

Love the Olympics - but us Canadians are reeling from yesterdays soccer game :(

I've been thinking along the same lines. Just to be in the Olympics is amazing and then it's implied that anything less than gold is substandard and that something went wrong?!

There's a lot of talk in the UK that our athletes are inspiring a lot of our younger generation, and that can only be a good thing. Time for the media to back off a bit I think!

I do absolutely agree with you! My girls don't have to come in first for me to be proud of them and I hope they grow up to be confident happy women no matter where they +place+ in life:)
PS Hope you are enjoying those late night feedings!
